The slaps of Hollywood action movie, or how screenwriters break their own rules

In this analytical and critical article, we will look at the most important gaffes in Hollywood blockbusters, violations of logic, rules and laws that the screenwriters have invented. It often happens that franchises are made by different directors, screenwriters, and studios, and even in individual films you can find gaffes that seem to hint that the filmmakers don’t care about logic or their audience. They say that we should think less and look more at graphic effects and explosions. Let’s analyze such moments.

Important! All the “nitpicking” refers exclusively to the fictional rules and laws that appeared earlier in the movie, not to the real physical properties or logic of the real world.

Iron Man made of cardboard

Iron Man

The very title of the movie contains a key word that will be later ignored by the screenwriters. From a super-powerful and durable suit, the “iron” man turned into a “cardboard” man. This is a big spit in the face of fans and all attentive viewers.

Iron Man is a powerful hero whose modified suit was initially shown to the audience to be almost invulnerable to physical damage. Back in the first part of the 2008 episode, comic book fans watched as a direct hit from a cannon and a fall from a considerable height did almost no harm to the suit and its operator, Tony Stark. The man remained completely unharmed, and the armor was only slightly scratched.

In the third part of the movie, everything changed beyond recognition. The costume was supposed to be much more sophisticated, but it turned into a cheap tin can that shatters when it hits a truck, as if it were an Aliexpress costume.

Throughout the movie, the Iron Soldiers dishonored the original film by falling apart from punches during battles with mutants. The screenwriters decided to turn one of the best superheroes into a helpless weakling, all because they forgot about the physical properties of the fictional costume.

Vision is a heroic nobody

Vision

This character was supposed to be a unique and powerful hero, but he was relegated to the bottom in subsequent films in order to fit into the childish and ridiculously written script of “Avengers: Infinity War”.

Vision first appears in the movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron”. He was supposed to become a new body for the mad artificial intelligence, but after performing a shamanic procedure with his hammer and Loki’s scepter, Thor created something unique – a new superhero who sided with the team of Earth’s defenders.

He is immediately shown to be strong, fast, and able to lift Thor’s hammer. He has all the best properties, can fly, is invulnerable to damage, and received many other things as a gift from the writers.

In the movie “Captain America: Civil War, the script shows this android to be incredibly strong. Vision nearly kills Rowdy in a suit of armor by barely hitting him with a beam. Nobody doubted the power of this character, everyone was waiting to see how he would realize himself and show in the next films, but it never happened.

The movie “Avengers: Infinity War” brought Vision to the bottom and trampled him into the swamp.

The once powerful character, without any explanation or apparent reason, became a worthless weakling and coward who is beaten for almost three hours, forced to flee, and then finally destroyed by a degraded robot.

It was very strange of the writers not to make at least some kind of explanation to the audience as to why this happened. The fans of the most popular franchise were clearly disappointed by this move, because it is indeed another spit in the face of the audience.

Time travel without a time machine

Edge of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow became a success thanks to its interesting concept of resetting time, or rather a day, which reminded many people of single-save video games. The movie is quite good and deserves attention, but the ending is absolutely idiotic and indefensible.

To understand the absurdity of it all, we need to briefly familiarize readers with the plot. So, the Earth was attacked by aliens. They are aggressive, fast, smart, strong, and they have a time machine and rewind it to avoid mistakes.

The alien race has a unique swarm-like structure. Among a large number of ordinary people, there are unique “Alphas” and the main “Omega”. The large Omega creature rewinds time when the Alpha dies. During the battle, the main character managed to meet the Alpha on the battlefield and wound the alien. It happened so that the Alpha’s blood got on the protagonist and he got a strong connection with Omega, like Alpha.

Every time he died, Omega would reset the day. This allowed the hero to gain a tactical advantage, find and neutralize Omega. Many unsuccessful attempts to break through in the massacre led to the fact that Tom Cruise’s character perfectly studied the battlefield and passed it like a champion in high-speed video games.

At the end of the movie, he manages to kill Omega, but at the cost of his own life. So, the aliens no longer have a time machine and are unable to turn back the clock. The protagonist is dead, and humanity has a chance to win. But the scriptwriters didn’t care about their own rules and decided to turn the day back, but without Omega, which completely negates the whole idea of the movie.

Ram at the speed of light

Ram at the speed of light

Hyperspace is an important word in the Star Wars movie series, as a large part of the franchise is about space travel at speeds exceeding the speed of light. This is what allows the heroes of the space fairy tale to move around the galaxy and show the audience a variety of worlds.

True fans of the franchise are well aware of what such engines are and can talk for a long time about the invented principles of the fictional technology. Let’s not go too deep into this topic, because to understand the absurdity of the new Disney trilogy, it is enough to recall the old movies, as well as those parts that adhere to the canons.

One of the best movies in the Rogue One franchise showed what happens in such cases. When trying to move into hyperspace, a small ship smashed into a space cruiser without causing any serious damage. This fits into the Star Wars concept and looks quite logical in this fabulous universe.

So why, in the second film of the new trilogy, were viewers forced to watch something that defies explanation, even in a fictional universe that they themselves (not actually they, but George Lucas) invented? The reasons for this were laziness, lack of new ideas, and unwillingness to watch the previous films to understand the essence of their tale much deeper.

A small ship at the speed of light rammed into the huge flagship, causing critical damage. The giant ship was destroyed by a simple battering ram. Such an effective weapon destroys the canons of this fictional universe, completely overturning everything the audience had seen in all the previous films.

It is not surprising that the movie “Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi” received terrible reviews, because the screenwriters either capitalize on old and worn-out ideas that cause a sense of déjà vu or create something absurdly new. That’s exactly what happened – violation of the canons, lack of common sense and indifference to the fans of the legendary franchise did their job.
